As of right now, there are many reasons why I want to dive into the world of modern Japan’s social and cultural history. Throughout my entire education, I have only ever taken history classes that focused on America or Europe. Coming to college has exposed me to history courses that are no longer Euro or western-centric. It helped me realize that I can expand my knowledge on cultures that have always been left under the rug in typical public education.

On a more personal note, I would like to learn about Japanese history given that I myself am half Japanese. I didn’t grow up with many opportunities to be fully immersed or educated in my culture, which has left me to be a whitewashed mixed person. Taking this class will definitely help me learn more about Japan in historical, social, and cultural ways.
